my eyes & my ears

Picture
A good spy never gets caught, and since no one ever suspects that I am a spy, it must mean that I'm great. My business is people. I people watch and eavesdrop to learn about human behavior. It's true that a lot of what I do is look at people and make up stories about them, so I guess I'm not really exploring human behavior as much as I'm inventing worlds for complete strangers to operate in based on aspects of their personalities that are visible to me.

I enjoy pretending. I like to look at people to extract their attractive and unique mannerisms and traits so I can use them as the foundation of characters I wish to develop. I like pretending that these strangers are my friends by fictionalizing them, making them close to me so I am never lonely. My "espionage," people-watching, eavesdropping efforts are how I get to know people.

Like my idol, Harriet M. Welsh, I want to know everything, and the only way to learn things, hear things, see things is to be observant. I want to be a writer, and writers are always watching and waiting for that divine moment of inspiration to strike. Here, I write my observations and encounters with people. These people are authentic, witty, eccentric, fascinating individuals; they have to be for me to want to write about them. These people are strangers, yet through observing them and writing about them, these people have become my friends.
